Book Review by Prof Greg Smith

If you have not already, please check out the review of the book “Coal and Coalbed Methane: Future Directions and Opportunities (2nd Edition) by Romeo M. Flores and me.

You can find the review here: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.coal.2025.104756

(International Journal of Coal Geology, v. 304, 104756).

Prof Smith from Curtain University in Perth, Australia is one of the leading experts in coal science and both Romey and I are honored that took the time to read and review our book.

As you can imagine, putting together a book of some 700+ pages is no walk in the park. It is a huge undertaking that is at both painful yet satisfying.

My most memorable part of writing the book with Romey was flying to Denver in August 2022 and spending two weeks staying at his house and just writing. As Romey always does, he wakes up super early, goes for a walk and comes back and has breakfast. I’d wake up a bit later while he was out and have my breakfast.

After a few coffees I’d sit at his dining room table and write and make figures while Romey did the same in his office down the hallway. Lunch time we go out together somewhere for a sandwich and discuss where we were at.

At about 4pm, if there were no thunderstorms, I’d take a two hour hike up the butte by Romey’s house. I almost always never saw anyone – only deer and hawks. It was peaceful and at 2500 m, great exercise. I can still hear the crunch of gravel under my shoes and smell the dryness of these high-plains deserts.

Although at the end of the two weeks I still had plenty more to write, I was fuelled up and ready to continue on my own. But the time spent with my friend and colleague will remain with me long after the book becomes obsolete.
